Salmon Scoop!
By: Akinnley

In one week, we will be releasing our salmon!  Time really flies by!  We had to change the water (15 gallons) because the ammonia count was just changing the test water to a light greenish yellow.  The fish are healthy, swimming fast, and officially smolt stage.

Salmon Scoop
By: Newman

This is the report about our fish tank for this week.  Their behavior seems very normal to me--nothing usual.  The fish population didn't decrease--it stayed the same.  The temperature is normal and that's what I notice.  In conclusion, everything is fine and normal except I think the fish's growth has been increasing.

Eat, Poop, and Grow
By: Claudia Y.

The fish eat alot now since they grew. They are about 2 1/2 inches and we cannot change them up to the next food size because they are not big enough.  They are always together in a school swimming and don't like to separate.  The temperature is always around 50 degrees.

It is really funny though when we feed them because they splash and jump to get the food.  Ms. Swartz tells us that they are giving us a shower.

Salmon ScoopBy: Preston S.

The fish behavior is doing good and they are rowing really good.  We lost a couple.  They're getting bigger.  When we change some of the water the fish seem a little scared.  I notice they gather together and become a school.  I find it cool that they move around together.

Salmon Scoop By: Daniel S.

There were a lot of changes in the fish tank.  The temperature got really high.  It was at 78.5 degrees.  In fact, it was working fine until we think the power went out on the weekend.  Ms. Swartz had to put some snow and ice in the tank.  We lost a few fish, but that is what happened last week.

We estimate our salmon at about 170 survivors in the tank.
Holy Salmon!  We got back from Christmas break and this is what we saw!  They are not eating yet, but we will start feeding them soon.  Some still have a little yolk sac, but you almost can't see it anymore.

Below is a video of our salmon "scooting" along the bottom of our tank.  They are starting to swim up and by the time we are back from Christmas break they should be swim up fry!

Welcome to another exciting year of Salmon in the Classroom!  This year we got our salmon on November 15th.  (It was a Saturday--our teacher came into school extra to put them in the tank.  She said she drove four hours to get them from the Wolf Lake Hatchery!  On Friday November 21st they started to hatch.  On Monday November 24th they were still hatching.  They did not look like salmon and had "jelly bellies" or yolk sacs.  They will use this and not start eating until after Christmas.  I can't wait to see what they look like!
Here are the eggs.  The black dots are their eyes.

We are waiting for the fish to hatch!
This is the FIRST salmon to hatch!  It does not  look like a fish yet!

Here is a whole group of hatching salmon on Friday afternoon.
